27/03/2006 -- EARS Member Breaks E-Class Record

EARS Member Oliver Neil Smith has become the latest holder of the E class altitude record pipping Colin Rowe's record of 1723ft by just 40ft.

Flying at CROCK's launch site on the Kent / Sussex borders on the 12th of March. 12 year old Oliver's rocket "WOWROC" soared to the new record of 1763ft / 537.36 m as verified by the onboard Perfectflite A15K altimeter.

WOWROC is a scratch-built minimum diameter craft built around Apollo Model Rocketry's 24mm foil lined body tube AET-50MF. It flew on an Estes E9-8 motor. Weighing in at 140 grams GLOW*, 75 grams without the motor. Recovery was with a 10" 'chute with a 2.5" spill-hole.

Oliver, who with his father Howard is a founding member of Purley Amateur Rocketry Society, is delighted with his achievement. He said:

"Thanks to the UKRA for looking after rocket records. I'm pleased my E-class flight has been accepted. I challenge UK rocketeers, especially people my age, to try to beat the new record. Looking forward to seeing everyone at BIG EARS."

Following the altitude shot the new record was speedily ratified by Richard Osborne, Chair of UKRA's Safety and Technical committee and custodian of UKRA's records. You can check out the record itself on the UKRA Records Page.

EARS would like to congratulate Oliver. Well done! Let's hope there are many more record attempts at Big EARS and other events through 2006.
